Lust for (the Beautiful) Life

While out shopping with my boyfriend one day, I spotted a Sephora.

“Sephora! Can I just pop in there for a minute?”

My boyfriend raised a suspicious brow. He was all too aware that a Sephora-minute has no actual correspondence to a real-world minute.

“No, really, it’ll only be, like, a minute. 45 seconds. I just need to put on some lipgloss.”

“Why not use one of the seven lip glosses you probably have in your purse right now?”
(He knows me well, this one).

“No, they‚’re not the same. This is the new Dior gloss. It’s incredible.”

“So you‚ have already tried it? Why do you need to try it again?”

“Because it’s DIOR. And it’s INCREDIBLE.”

“So buy it.”

“It’s $30…”

“But if you love it so much, isn’t it worth it?”

I had already run into the store at that point, but it was much more complicated than my boyfriend’s simple logic. It’s not that I think $30 is an unreasonable amount to drop on a product you really love. It’s just…well, how do you know whether it really is love? Every so often, a new and fabulous product is launched, and the beauty savvy all but audibly gasp in unison and in awe. DiorShow IcePearl. Chanel Black Satin. Lancome PS Kiss. Words that mean little to the non-beauty-obsessed send our little hearts a-patter.

What is it about these products that sends us into those dizzying throes of desire? Is it the endorsement from impossibly glamorous celebrities who sport the coveted goods? Is it mere exclusivity? Or are these products truly unparalleled in beauty and function?

The reasons why we fall in lust; be it with products or with people; remain a mystery. And when we finally attained the swoon-worthy object, the fervor often fades. It becomes just another item possessed, perhaps to be regarded fondly during times of reminiscence, but it no longer has that heady hold upon our affections.

But sometimes, lust can develop into something deeper. I finally did buy that incredible gloss, and I’m pleased to report that my admiration for it grows with each use. In beauty, as in love, only time can tell who the true winners are. Until then, enjoy those stolen moments with your produits-du-jour.

Ever-lasting lust may not exist, but there really is nothing quite like the thrill of indulging in some hedonistic luxury…especially if that luxury is courtesy of Christian Dior.
