Scent and Seduction

By Gaia Fishler • January 30th, 2008

From Eve, who tempted Adam with the scent of a delicious fruit, to Coco Chanel, who advised women to dab perfume “wherever one wants to be kissed,” the connection between scent and seduction runs throughout human history. Even Marilyn Monroe reinforced her sex symbol status by declaring: “What do I wear to bed? Why, Chanel No. 5, of course!“.

Another perfume legend that might as well be true is the general agreement among sale assistants at Guerlain counters all over the world that when a man goes there to buy a fragrance for his significant other, his choice would most likely be Shalimar because of its sweet vanilla base.

Though the exact reason for this is not clear, one hypothesis is that vanilla reminds men of their childhoods and the comforts of mom’s kitchen. We don’t have to get all “Oedipus,” however, to agree upon vanilla’s yumminess factor, which works for men and women alike.

If Eau de Pudding is not your thing, there are other perfume notes with a come-hither reputation. For example, you can tap into your animalistic side by choosing a musk fragrance. Originally made from the glandular secretion of a musk deer, today‚Äôs musks are thankfully synthetic — but not less potent.

Then there are also the “diva” scents: The big white florals that range from the classic Fracas, which has been turning heads since 1947, to the modern and stylish Serge Lutens Fleur d‚ÄôOranger.

The bottom line? There isn’t just one ultimate perfume for a big date. Just as you choose the right outfit and the best lipstick to feel good and comfortable in your skin, do the same with fragrance. Wear what you love and whatever makes you feel sensual and desirable.

Before applying your perfume, smooth on either a matching lotion or an unscented cream to prepare your skin. This will help your skin to absorb the scent and makes it last. Dab or spray perfume on your pulse points and in your cleavage. Your body heat will help the perfume radiate from you and do its magic.
