I Know This Much Is True: Myths With Merit
By Daneen Baird

Some beauty myths are so appealing, that you wish they were true. And though most of them are a bunch of nonsense, a small minority actually has some merit.

Here’s the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth – so help me, Sephora.

Myth 1:

You should never rub your wrists together when you apply fragrance. TRUE. Rubbing perfume can bruise the oils contained in the fragrance, altering the scent. Instead, apply perfume to pulse points – wrists, décolletage, behind the ears, and in the crook of the elbows – and let dry. My faves are Hanae Mori Butterfly and Prada Infusion D’Iris.

Myth 2:

Rinsing your hair with beer will make it thicker. TRUE. Beer coats the hair with hops, which “builds up the circumference of the shafts,” says Philip Berkovitz, founder of Philip B. Unfortunately, it can leave hair looking dull – not to mention smelling like a brewery. Instead of pouring a pint over your head, try Nexxus Diametress Luscious Hair Thickening Shampoo or Ojon Hydrating Thickening Shampoo.

Myth 3: You shouldn’t file your nails back and forth; doing so will cause breakage. TRUE. Always file nails in one direction, from each side of the nail in toward the center, to help prevent nails from splitting. The Sephora Glass Nail File Glass Nail Files shapes and smoothes nail edges; then run this baby under water, and it’s good as new.

  1. So help me, Sephora! HILAR, Daneen.

  2. Myth # 1 is still a myth. Allure magazine had a letter from the editor, Linda Wells, where she reported that a chemist told her it is impossible to “break” the molecules in a fragrance and alter it. My downstairs neighbor, a chemistry professor, confirmed it when I asked him.

  3. I love how you debunked these myths with your great sense of humor Daneen!
Now I’m going to have to go out and get me one of those files!
