Skincare: When More Isn’t

It’s been a long journey for my skin. It was a journey through lotions, creams and serums - oh my! Like many women, I was eternally questing for ‘hope in a jar,’ buying into the myth and marketing that preaches products as saviors. I spent thousands of dollars and sadly enough, my skin only suffered in the process, continually breaking out. A simple visit to my dermatologist and several interviews with skincare gurus later, I came to discover a few universal truths of skincare:
1: Eat well. The vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables keep skin healthy.
2: Drink 8-12 glasses of water daily. If you find water boring, think again or better yet, add lemon, lime, orange, sliced cucumbers or mint for flavor.
3: Wear sunscreen. With the myriad of products available that incorporate SPF (mineral foundation, moisturizers, etc.), there’s no excuse.
4: Shun the sun. It’s no friend of yours if you plan on aging gracefully!
5: Get 7-9 hours of beauty sleep nightly.
6: Don’t even think of touching your face. And don’t forget to change your pillowcases regularly!
Last, but not least…
7: Simplicity is key. Keep your daily routine brief; try a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil, a reliable eye cream (I like Shiseido) and a moisturizer that’s appropriate to your skin type (Stella McCartney’s is my fave.)
