How to Achieve a “Summer Shimmy Glow”

By Julia Coney • May 1st, 2008

Summer always brings out the suntan lotion and the self-tanners. But, what happens when you are already tanned? What I’m saying is, what if you are a woman of color who already has a golden glow? I’m African-American and a deep chocolate. I look forward to summer because this is when I can get my “summer shimmy glow” perfect. What I mean by that is applying products that don’t self-tan, but allow your natural colors to come through. I definitely get darker in the summer and I want that bronzed glow all over. I love to apply Clinique’s Up-lighting Liquid Illuminator or Becca’s Shimmering Skin Perfecter to my tinted moisturizer for a beauty glow to my face. I don’t finish with powder, because summer is about being carefree and glowing.

Since I love to be glowing all over, there isn’t a day in the summer that I don’t use a bronzing oil. The granddaddy of all bronzing oils has been NARS Body Glow. It’s full of luscious ingredients such as Tahitian Monoi Oil and coconut oil. Another favorite of mine is Carol’s Daughter Gelee de Soleil. This can be used at the beach or alone to protect the skin and to give it that subtle glow. The pineapple scent is so delicious and all your friends will be jealous of your phenomenal skin after seeing you. My last pick is Sephora’s Super Sheen Bronzing Mist. I spray it in my hands and rub it on my hair brush and then my hair has a delicious scent and shimmer. If you are already “tanned” like me - try these products out. You won’t be disappointed.
